The 10 Best Valentine’s Day 2020 Events in Long Beach for Every Budget

Jolly Sailing Long Beach @explorelongbeach @parentdaze California

What is everyone doing for Valentine’s Day this year?

When I did an instagram poll earlier in the week, several of you said you were looking for experiences vs dinner, so I compiled some of the coolest experiences going on for VDay.  About a third of you said you were going out to eat, so I included some dinners as well.

Luckily in our amazing city of Long Beach, we have cool stuff to do year-round, but I have seen some extra special events or special pricing for regular events this year for Valentine’s Day.  Here are my favs.  Enjoy!

Gondola Getaway

Gondola Getaway Long Beach California

Take a trip through the Napals Canals on a Gondola Getaway!  We had the opportunity to check out their Valentine’s Day package a week in advance, and it was a wonderful experience for the entire family.  I loved that the kids could come with us because they are both too young for a lot of the other water experiences on this list, so we were able to celebrate as a family.  Each VDay cruise comes with a professional gondolier, a beautiful red rose with greenery, free corkage, and a complimentary group photo.  There are packages for 2-10 people, and the gondoliers serenade you as you cruise.  This is a great option for both families or dates.  They have Groupons available most of the year, but they aren’t valid for special occasions.

Long Beach Parasail

Long Beach Parasail, Shoreline Village, Long Beach California, @explorelongbeach @parentdaze

We did this last summer and it was a really romantic and relaxing experience.  The view from up high was great, and the ride is gentle and not scary.  The best part is, they are doing a buy one get one sale for VDay weekend, so you only need to pay for one rider.  Check out their link to book using discount code LOVE.  Offer valid Feb 14th-17th.  They also have Groupons available a lot of other times of the year.

Valentine’s Day at The Pike

The Pike Outlets, Long Beach

I just found out that Valentine’s Day is also National Ferris Wheel Day!  Normally the ferris wheel is $4/person, which would be $16 for a family of 4.  It’s doable, but we’re less likely to go out to eat or spend in other places during that outing once we’ve spent almost $20.  So for National Ferris wheel Day/Valentine’s Day, The Pike Outlets is hosting an event with buy one get one ferris wheel rides, among other things.  The event will also feature free caricatures, sweet treats, carnations, and giveaways.  This is probably where you will find me on VDay because we’ll have the kiddos with us and this looks like a great family event.

Jolly Sailing

Jolly Sailing, Long Beach, sailboat @parentdaze @explorelongbeach

Jolly Sailing allows you to charter a sailboat with up to 6 people. It was founded with the intention of making sailing affordable for everybody, and it’s a really great value for the price.  You can bring your own food and drinks, and you can even steer the boat.  The owner, Max, is so pleasant you will feel like you have another friend with you (though he can make himself scarce if you’re looking for a more private experience.) They offer both daytime sails and sunset sails, and it’s a fun outing whether it’s hot or cool (the cool weather is nice to cozy up under a blanket!)

Shoreline Village

Shoreline Village Love Locks, Long BeachShoreline is great option because you can make it fit into any budget.  They have a Love Lock fence, reminiscent of the love locks in Paris, and you can purchase locks there for around $12, if I recall correctly.  They can even engrave the lock with your names and the date.  Your spending can end there, if you choose, and you can stroll along the water and take in the views.  Alternatively, you can opt for a longer experience by eating at one of the many delicious restaurants, or doing another experience (Both Jolly Sailing and Long Beach parasail are located here.)

Valentine Movie Night at The Hangout

If you’re looking for something low-key but still want to get out of the house, this is a great option forThe Hangout, Long Beach you.  The Hangout is hosting a movie night complete with slow dancing, hot cocoa, DIY s’mores, and a special Valentine’s Day movie.  Bring a blanket to snuggle up with your loved one.  The movie starts at 7, and tix are $14 a person.  Link below.

Valentine’s Day Night Dive at The Aquarium

Aquarium of the Pacific, Night Dive, Long Beach CaliforniaIf you’re the type that likes to move around (I know I am), a great VDay experience for you would be Night Dive at the Aquarium of the Pacific. This 18+ event features live music, food trucks, DJs, drinks, and live murals.  Plus you get the opportunity to wander around the aquarium and look at all the animals without the crowd and without the kids.  It’s only $19.95/person or free for members.  Must purchase advance tix.

And now for the dinners portion:

Belmont Brewing Company

The BBC is one of the few Long Beach restaurants that is on the water, outside of the marinas. Their Belmont Brewing Company, BBC, Long Beach Californiaoutdoor seating area is enclosed, has heaters, and has a gorgeous ambient fire pit.  They have a special VDay dish of New Zealand lamb chops served with pesto mashed potatoes, grilled veggies, and red wine sauce.  They have a large beer craft beer selection that they brew onsite, and they also have a full bar.  Everything we’ve had their has been great.

The Attic on Broadway

TThe Attic on Broadway, Long Beach, Californiahe Attic features farm-to-table versions of your fav comfort foods.  I particularly like their famous Mac n Cheetos, their chicken and waffles, okay actually I like everything there.  Their indoor seating is cozy and reminiscent of a cottage living room, and the outdoor seating overlooks the trendy Broadway area.  They will be having a special prix fixe Valentine’s Day menu available.  Call for reservations.

The 4th Horseman

If you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day of the darker variety, or you’re not the type to enjoy all the sappy The 4th Horseman, Downtown Long Beach, Californiastuff, The 4th Horseman is where you want to be for Valentine’s Day.  They will be showing creepy films, playing sexy tunes, and their 3 course meal for 2 is only $35. It will include an appetizer, a “Hillbilly Deluxe” special pizza, dessert, and a Magnum of the Champagne of Beers (750 mL of Miller High Life.) Sorry, no reservations.  The special is available all night Friday and throughout the weekend, as long as supplies last.

Watch movies in style! New Cinemark Luxury Loungers in Orange have heat, foot rests, and they recline!

Cinemark Orange California New Luxury Loungers

Isn’t it about time movie theaters had comfortable seating?!

Cinemark Orange New Luxury Loungers

Cinemark Orange New Luxury Loungers

You get the big screen, the surround sound, the delicious buttery popcorn… how come you have to sit in a chair that’s way less comfortable than your couch at home?!  The Cinemark in Orange, CA decided to fix this problem.  Their new Luxury Loungers resemble your favorite recliner at home, only better.  They’re plush and comfortable, they recline, they have foot rests, and they even have heat.  Each lounger also comes with its own tray and cup holder that swivels in – so you can find optimum placement for your snacks, and swivels out – so you don’t have to put your snacks on the ground if you get up to go to the bathroom.

They’re plush and comfortable, they recline, they have foot rests, and they even have heat.

Cinemark Orange California Cafe Area

We took the kids to see Frozen 2 this week, which they loved!  And honestly, I daresay it might even be better than the first one.  I would definitely consider seeing it again, even without the kids.  The new recliners elevated the viewing experience to an entirely new level.  Everyone was comfortable, the kids were able to see the screen, and they were super excited to have their own snack trays.

And honestly, I daresay Frozen 2 might even be better than the first one.

Cinemark Orange California Arcade

Cinemark Orange California Arcade

Cinemark in Orange has made several other upgrades as well.  They have added 2 new Cinemark XD theaters, you can reserve your seats in advance so no more rushing to get a good seat, and they have expanded the seating area in the cafe.  They also have a variety of snacks like pizza and nachos, in addition to the popcorn and candy.  There’s an arcade with a big assortment of games, and there’s a photobooth.  We liked that the beers were reasonably priced – less than $10 for a 24 oz craft beer, and the selection was good, too.

We haven’t taken the kids to very many movies because at 2.5 and 4.5, we never know how they’re going to behave.  This experience was so much fun for them and it definitely made us more likely to take them again in the future.  The addition of the new loungers gave us all a more comfortable and relaxed experience, and the immersive nature of seeing a movie on the big screen was really special and exciting for them!

5 Ways to Beat the Heat in Long Beach for Every Budget

Wheel Fun Rentals, Shoreline Village, Long Beach

September is always sneaky hot.

Just when I think summer is over (I mean, LABOR DAY), we get hit with a heat wave.  Here are a few ways to stay cool on or near the water for every budget.

KAYAKS ON THE WATER

Kayaks on the Water

Kayaks on the Water, Long Beach

This is one of Long Beach’s hidden gems.  Located at 5411 E Ocean Blvd (aka horny corner), Kayaks on the Water place has both kayaks and paddleboards and it’s super affordable.  Kayaks go for $12/hour and you pay at the end so you can stay out as long as you want.  To paddleboard, you must take their instructional course first for $25 for the hour.  Once you are “certified,” you become a speed pass member and can paddle for $16/hour.  (There is also a $10 one time application fee for the paddleboards.) . Call ahead for large groups.  You must know how to swim to kayak or paddle.

LONG BEACH PARASAIL

Anchors Away Boat Rentals, Long Beach

Anchors Away Boat Rentals, Long Beach

Gather up your friends and family and cruise around Naples Canals!  Duffy boat rentals from Anchors Away are only $90/hour with a minimum of 2 hours.  That may sound like a lot, but when you consider the fact that you can bring your own food and drinks and that it can seat up to 12 people, it ends up being a great value for an afternoon of relaxing on a boat.   And they have free parking! Make sure to book in advance so they don’t sell out!

GONDOLA GETAWAY

About Beetlejuice

After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose “help” quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.

Halloween Edition – best costume wins a very special prize!
Legend is a word used all too often these days, but when it comes to Doc Martin, there’s hardly a better description of the humble man that has been there from the very beginning. Easily one of our favorite DJs, he whips the dance floor into an absolute frenzy every time he’s behind the decks. For the 30th edition of Subtract On The Pier, he will be performing an extended 5 hour B2B set with our founder Anton Tumas. Supporting set by Junior.

Date Night at the Long Beach Aquarium Member’s Prom!

We had an amazing childless night at the Long Beach Aquarium Member’s Prom last night. It was Roaring 20s themed and I could not have asked for a better night. We had so much fun drinking and dancing, and actually got to look at the animals without having to chase our kids. And to top if off, we Postmated happy meals and sundaes from Mcdonalds after we got home and ate them on the couch! It’s nice to have some time alone to remind us why we fell in love. I woke up today feeling so lucky to have someone as wonderful as Jason. (And perhaps a tad like I had one too many beers . But mostly lucky.)
